Ryan Edel

Ryan Edel is a creative writer living in Baltimore. He just earned his MFA in fiction last May, and he currently teaches Introduction to Fiction and Poetry at Johns Hopkins.

Before earning his MFA, he served in the U.S. Army for five years as an Arabic linguist. He spent three years with the 82nd Airborne Division, including a ten-month tour in Afghanistan.

As a writer, Ryan sees the creative process as a way to better understand our inner lives. Through stories and poems, we can connect with others at a deeper level than is sometimes possible in face-to-face conversations. When it comes to difficult or uncertain memories, he believes that we sometimes need the anonymity of fiction to both protect our feelings and fill in the inevitable gaps in recollection.

Ryan is currently building a website to offer ideas and support for writers and teachers of writing. He hopes to eventually develop an online community which offers free and low-cost writing courses accessible to writers of all levels.
