It is enormously difficult but fun to do a writing resume at age 58. To make the long story as brief as possible, I didn't start buckling down until 1980, ten years after my high school graduation, when I went to college with no burning goal other than to start a journey. By 1985, I had an associate's degree in forestry and just about all the undergraduate courses necessary for a bachelor's in geology, but I just wasn't ready for geochemistry then and the financial aid ran out.
It was a difficult time. After bailing out of college and starting work in Albany with Kelly Services, I still wanted something more and so began to travel through America, working with Kelly Services until no temp jobs were available and I got a receptionist job in New Mexico.
Somewhere along the way, I discovered the wonders of basic English and found that I could type quickly, and because of my college experience, do basic research and handle technical terms easily. Medical transcription called, and I ended up in an entry-level position with a small company in San Francisco, later on coming back East, where I have been ever since.
Now writing calls. While I did sell a few freelance science articles to local newspapers back in the 1980s, it is a whole new world now, and there is much to learn. The Yahoo Contributor Network is a wonderful place to break in and share my love of the craft with others.
