kazi mahmood
Has 30 years experience as a journalist, having worked for the Africa Now magazine since 1982. He was first published in 1978 in the Advance newspaper (Mauritius) and in Arab Times of London. He subsequently worked for the BBC Radio Africa, based in Mauritius.
With the BBC I focussed more on stories of human interest, politics and cultural issues. I traveled the Indian Ocean, reporting for the BBC and writing for Africa Confidential (www.africa-confidential.com). Africa Confidential was more on investigative journalism and commentaries on the political-economic situation in Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles and Reunion Island. The Islands of the Comoros too were widely covered for the Africa Confidential.
In Mauritius, I covered 2 major elections in 1987 and 1991 baffling the BBC Network Africa staff with accurate results.
I started to write at the age of 13, exploring the art of poetry in English and French. Studying economics and literature during high school and focussed on journalism right after leaving school at the age of 18. That means I never went to university or to institutions of higher learning, but that did not prevent me from becoming a journalist at the age of 20. It has been 30 more years now that I am involved in this noble profession.
Interviewed the Mauritian Prime Minister, Sir Anerood Jugnauth for the BBC Network Africa. Also interviewed most of the major Ministers in the Mauritian government between 1987 to 1992, including the Finance Minister of Mauritius Vishnu Lutchmeenaraidoo. Interviewed Francois Mitterand during the French President's visit to Madagascar and has since establishing in Malaysia, interviewed many front-line figures in the Malaysian opposition.
