Mel Gilden

MEL GILDEN is the author of many children's books, the latest to appear in hardcover being THE PUMPKINS OF TIME, a Browndeer Press book from Harcourt Brace. In 1999 his first CYBERSURFER book (written with Ted Pedersen) won the prestigious Italian award, the Selezione Bancarellino, for children's fiction. Since July of 1996, he has been writing articles for a STAR TREK encyclopedia to be published in Great Britain by Aerospace LTD. In November of 1998 he wrote the first of his many multi-part stories for the Kids Reading Room page of the Los Angeles Times.
His other books include such titles as THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN CONQUER; HARRY NEWBERRY AND THE RAIDERS OF THE RED DRINK; OUTER SPACE AND ALL THAT JUNK (A Junior Library Guild selection); and THE PLANETOID OF AMAZEMENT, all of which received good to raving reviews in such places as School Library Journal and Booklist. He is also the primary writer of the popular FIFTH GRADE MONSTERS series, and of the three MY BROTHER BLUBB books. His latest novel is BRITNEY SPEARS IS A THREE-HEADED ALIEN.
Books for grown-ups include SURFING SAMURAI ROBOTS, which received good reviews in the Washington Post and other publications, and which has spawned two sequels. They concern the adventures of Zoot Marlowe, alien gumshoe, who has come to Earth to solve crimes in the hardboiled manner.
Also available is THE PET (written with Pedersen), CARDASSIAN IMPS, BOOGEYMEN, and THE STARSHIP TRAP, all four novels written in the STAR TREK universe; number one best-selling novelizations of stories from BEVERLY HILLS, 90210; and the novelization of the live-action Disney film, THE JUNGLE BOOK. His read-along story book RAINBOW BRITE SAVES SPRING sold over a million copies. He wrote both the read-along and the storyteller for Disney's TOY STORY 2.
Gilden has also published short stories in many original reprint anthologies, most recently BRUCE COVILLE'S BOOK OF ALIEN VISITORS, and THE ULTIMATE ALIEN.
