Brent Champaco

Brent Champaco is an award-winning sports journalist with deep Northwest roots. He has written for newspapers and Internet companies across Washington, and he has covered prep, college and professional sports.

A graduate of Washington State University, he fell in love with the idea of sports journalism during the Seattle Supersonics' mid-90's heyday. He covered the 2001 men's basketball team at WSU for the student paper, as well as the Branson boys basketball team's state title run when he was a Chips Quinn Scholar in California.

After dabbling on the news side for nearly a decade after college - which included award-winning stints in Pullman, Tri-Cities and The News Tribune in Tacoma - he returned to the sports realm as a Senior Local Editor for He took first place in the online sports category of the Society of Professional Journalists competition in 2012, as well as the Washington Press Association contest.

Some of his favorite assignments:
-The Seahawks' Super Bowl run in 2005
-The botched Tony Romo hold a year later
-The infamous Monday Night Football touchdown call in 2012
-The first year of the Pac-12 Conference basketball tournament
-The Curtis High boys basketball team's 2013 state championship

Champaco was also a Seattle Sounders season ticket-holder for two years. While he's a WSU grad, his father attended Washington, so Apple Cups are always fun. Champaco lives just outside of Seattle with his wife and two daughters.
