The Summer of AlrightnessIn no particular order (aside from Star Trek) I present the SUMMER of 2009....the bland summer of 2009...the summer I think that could have been better settling for alright.

"District 9" Movingly Thought ProvokingThere is an interesting concept with this. It probably could take on several different perspectives that tie-in with our reality, but the one I'm thinking of is illegal aliens and that debate. -
"The Time Traveler's Wife" a Good ParadoxThey never specified by dates where they were. It was based on how things looked in the scene as well as the actor's age. I liked that. -
"Julie & Julia" Twice the Motivation, Twice Actress PowerI like how Julie & Julia show that working hard at something you love and want to do and seeing it to the end actually really makes a difference, and it may make a difference not only in yours but other people's lives. -
"G.I. Joe" OHNOSE*....It's Just Action-GO JOE!A toy is created. A cartoon is created from the toys. A few comic books are made. Now a movie has happened. History dictates that there is not a lot of thought put into this to begin with, so expectations should be around the mindless action area. -
"Funny People" is Conflicted ComedyIt, as well as Apatow, had a hard time deciding if it was to be a darkly comic experience or an overly dramatic with a bit of funny experience. -
"The Ugly Truth" is it was Misogynisticly AlrightIt is an uncouth movie that I just think was alright funny. It had some outrageous moments that had me really laughing loudly, but over all it was far too simple for my taste. -
"(500) Days of Summer" Painfully TrueGordon-Levitt and Deschanel did painfully good job. I really like Deschanel. I think she's a great actress but she reminded me so much of someone who shared similar relationship philosophy that it was so easy to totally dislike her. -
"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" a Bloody Awesome MovieOne minute things are funny and the next it's depressing. It's a rollercoaster of human emotions and it's not at all jarring or annoying. It's smooth and reasonable. -
"I Love You, Beth Cooper" Yummmm...If you liked the trailers then you will pretty much enjoy the entire film. It has more moments that are funnier than the trailer. -
"Bruno" 'Worse Than Cancer'I was not offended by anything that I saw in this movie. I laughed a lot. However, the problem is that the movie isn't 20 minutes long. It's an hour and two minutes longer. An hour and two minutes of NOT funny..... -
"Public Enemies" & "Ice Age 3" Give New Meaning to Mediocre---and NO it was NOT NecessaryI have never wrote for two movies in a single movie review, but I'm sick and tired of horrible movies being passed off as great ideas for summer and these two have broke the camel's back. -
"My Sister's Keeper" There Will Be TearsI think My Sister's Keeper is very good with the emotional pull it has and the way it tells a story that, as I've heard, comes from a book that hails from different points of view. It does so without causing confusion in the storyline. -
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" My Autobot Heart is RustedTransformers II was one one-liner after another and the action was more like someone smashing pots and pans together. -
"The Proposal" I'm Amused Just Thinking About ItIt's rare that I would find a comedy amusing and get lost in how long it is taking for it to be over. -
"Away We Go" the Real Dynamic DuoThere is an array of actors as well as characters. With great acting great characters emerge. Get the right actors to play the quirky characters and you get characters that no longer are being played but actually exist. -
"The Hangover" Down Right Freakn' Awesome...itching for the next part to come so I could laugh because that was freakin' hilarious and so was that and that and that and of course that.

Star Trek - XI - Trektasatic!...I wanted MORE. The movie was 2+ hours and I just wanted more. I wanted a 3 hour epic that Lord of the Rings boasted for three Decembers straight.

"Ghosts of Girlfriend's Past" I Barely Even Want to Talk About ItThe best parts were when the girlfriend ghost came. The first one was Allison Vandermeersh, played by Emma Stone, and she was awesome. -
"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" Makes Me Want X4I am a diehard X-Men fan. I know enough about the comic book to understand everyone's past as well as their personalities and important storylines.

"State of Play" Be in the KnowClocking in close to 2 hours I did not check my cell phone to see what time it was. I was engrossed the entire time about what was going on. -
"17 Again" I'll See it AgainThere are flaws, but I enjoyed the over all picture and therefore gave it the highest grade I could. I say this because I realize that I am one of the few critics that actually really liked it.... -
"Hannah Montana the Movie" Entertaining, I Know :(This whole Hannah Montana thing reminds me of "Jem" that 80's cartoon. I placed a photo to jumpstart some memories on that.

"Knowing" Alienating Nicolas Cage from the Good and Smart ActorsThat picture looks like she's asking, "Are you sure this is a good script?" And Cage states, "I don't know what a good script is any more. Pity me."

"I Love You, Man" Bromantic and BrotasticThe trailer isn't a let down. You laugh during the trailer you most certainly will laugh throughout this film. -
"The Watchmen" Graphic Blood, Guts, Thoughts and Blue PenisFrom the beginning to the end the movie is murky with who is good and who is evil. It is questionable on what way to bring about 'peace' to mankind. -
"Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail" Makes You Laugh and ThinkFunny like being a the lunch table and the friend that is a comedian just spouts out line after line of funny and laughter just bellows out of everyone sitting there, but it's not so much it causes tears. -
"Fired Up" is a Fun Movie, is is a Fun MovieIt is a premise that has been done before. This movie even has a scene where they watch part of Bring It On. All premises have been done before. What then matters is it entertaining? I believe it was.

"Coraline" It's OkBut I think that the story was a bit dry for my taste. It was really long. Animated films are not made to be so long and drawn out. It felt like it was a 30 minute short that was stretched out.

"Inkheart" was Nowhere Near Inspiring as Words Can BeWhat an imaginative story that was withered to nothing but drivel via Hollywood's finger of death. -
"Defiance" What History Class Skipped OverStory wise it had historical backing which makes it more tolerable, because of time, than if it were fiction. They defied the Nazis as well as anyone who stood up with them.

"The Wrestler" Bleeding Hearts Dry"I'm just a broken down piece of meat" is said in the trailer and in the film where it is used dramatically, I thought it was cheesy. -
"Bride Wars" Straight to DVD Disaster...and a script by Casey Wilson, June Raphael and Greg de Paul who don't have a blockbuster movie between them and you get a straight to DVD disaster.

"Doubt" is Undoubtedly Awe-tasticThe subtleties in this film are numerous and without a doubt one of the nuances that make this movie. It all rests solely on the shoulders of the actors (just like on the stage) to make the film become powerful, meaningful and memorable. -
"Bedtime Stories" Pre-Parental Approval to Watch Over and Over Again... but with the bland fare that is marketed for kids and then not so great for the adults to sit through I think that if a film is good for the kids and the adults it's worthy of a high mark. -
"Marley & Me" Will Give You the Case of Doggy AppreciationMarley & Me is one of those films that just snagged me by surprise. I thought it was not going to be anything special. But as I was viewing it I was flipped because it was way different than I had thought. -
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" a Story that Flirts with Our CuriosityLet me jump right into this and say that Brad and Cate do a fantastic job. They have great chemistry together. So well was it I think that we might hear about how he leaves Angelina for the ever hotter Cate. -
"Frost/Nixon" Fallen Pride Private/PubliclyWow. I now have someone to rival my first Presidential pick for Best Actor: Frank Langella as Richard Nixon. This is one of those times I can't pick between how well two people have done in their roles.

"Valkyrie" the Greatest Plan that FailedIt was the greatest plan to have never worked. Knowing that this was not how Hitler came to his demise made this difficult, because the plan was so well thought out that I had to keep reminding myself that it fails. -
"The Tale of Despereaux" Could Be Boring-erThe characters were slightly charming but not enough to eek out caring for them or what they were going through. They were too one dimensional. Compacted with the storyline that was boring it produced a film that just failed.

"Transporter 3" Disappointment III really like Transporter. I did not like the second one and I can state that the third one is one that I liked slightly better. I am so disappointed. -
"Australia" Epic and TouchingEpic can mean lots of things such as really long and tiresome or outstanding and awesome. I am personally using it as outstanding and awesome. I liked A.I., The Village, and The Happening while other people did not. -
"Four Christmases" Hit/MissVince Vaughn is the same in almost every single film. I can't imagine how annoying a movie would be if all it was about were the characters he played. -
"Twilight" Girly, Girl Vampire-ishTwilight seems to have waved a uterus magic wand and created girly, girlish vampires. They've, in a sense, bedazzled them.

"Bolt" is ThrillisiousDisney has talent that just can't seem to be matched. Maybe I'm just attached, but last weeks Madagascar II did not have the same character cool and attachment that Bolt has. -
"Call + Response" Good Intentions, Messy ExecutionI was interested in this documentary. Then I saw it and I was still interested but less in need of a nap. I did fall asleep. -
"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" Friendship that Transcends PrejudiceIt is a harrowing tale and a prism of a story.

"Role Models" Tries to Be More Than Crude HumorFirst of all Paul Rudd is always the grumpy character with an issue and Seann William Scott is always the carefree cheerful person who is horny. It's not a problem in this film, but it's starting to get redundant. -
"Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" Does Not Have a Heartfelt ConnectionI like the animation because it's different and that's good. The problem is that for some reason DreamWorks just lingers behind Disney, to me. -
"The Changeling" Drowns Story in Unnecessary LengthAngelina Jolie does not disappoint in her weeping, her anger, her frustration; her array of emotions are displayed for the audience in a rainbow of vibrant colors throughout the film. -
"RocknRolla" a Rockin' Good TimeI like Guy Ritchie movies. They are like watching foreign films without the subtitles. I sometimes need subtitles even though what they are supposedly speaking is some form of English. -
"Zack and Miri Make a Shhhh" Utah Won't Let Me Type ItIf you watch "House" you know that Dr. House is not a nice person. Now when he decides to be nice people don't buy it because they think he's up to something, so his nice is not seen as sincere.

"W." Baseball, Beer and BriefingsIt's funny because I really wanted to see W. but it's not that type of movie that I just drool for, normally. Apparently I've been doing this a lot as of late. Ha. I am, by no means, someone that stands up for what Bush does or has done as President.

"The Secret Lives of Bees" Bruised Heart and a SmileThe Secret Lives of Bees is a fantastic character movie. It's been a long while since I've seen a film that champions characters. -
"Sex Drive" it was Not an Hour and 1/2Of course the importance of this road trip is to de-sex a character. That's always important in films like these. The odd thing is that people are comparing this to Super Bad and that's retarded. -
"Appaloosa" Friendship Stands TallWesterns are, as I've stated before, not one of the genres I like. I do like some westerns but it is an iffy process. With Appaloosa I was on that iffy precipice. -
"Fireproof" What a Burning SurpriseOk, the acting was pretty good. It's rated PG because of the fire sequences and some of the shouting, but there's no foul language. Cameron has to yell and get in the face of his onscreen wife and he was fierce. -
"The Express" a Powerful TrotThe movie is over 2 hours long and that was slightly noticeable once the end came around where he won the trophy. It was pushing the too long length for a moment, but then it ended and I concluded it was a good movie over all. -
"City of Ember" Fades to ForgottenI never read the book. The general idea is interesting, but the movie seems to flounder a bit. I dislike the character development. -
"Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" Plays Loyalties TuneI wanted to see this film from the moment I saw the poster months ago. Michael Cera is just a funny guy. Watching those webisodes proved that more and more to me.

"Blindness" Totally Lost Sight of Storyline ImportanceIt's been a long while since I've seen a movie that totally made me rethink how horrible I thought Brother Where Art Thou was.

"Eagle Eye" Cherry Phone; ExcitingLet's just get this straight, Eagle Eye is not Oscar caliber and it's certainly not one of the best films of the year, but it does deliver scene of action after action after action. -
"Ghost Town" is Charming in a Negative WayI saw this trailer and instantly I thought of Heart and Souls with Robert Downey Jr. as the kind child turn cold hearted meany head. -
"Tyler Perry's the Family that Preys" Laughs, Loves and CaresNormally I just stray from seeing his films. I don't really know why I just have this aversion to names in titles.

"Burn After Reading" was Laugh After ViewingIt's always a hit and miss with me and my liking of a Coen Brother's film. I see that they are very talented and that if I dislike one of their films it's mainly because it's just not my taste and not because of any lack in the creative department. -
"Bangkok Dangerous" Isn't Even Close to Being SuchThis is the lull of the movie season. Ever been to an awesome concert outside and then used a porta potty? -
"Hamlet 2" Means to Offend and of Course MendIf you are easily offended this film is so not for you. It will offend you with the first couple of minutes, most likely.

"American Teen" Ordinarily Labeled with Extraordinary InsightI will tell you what I learned from watching this and that is that teenagers just should skip the whole relationship thing until they are out of high school. -
"Death Race" Thrill Ride, Not a WasteIt's all about the action. It's all about the fun. It's not all about the plot or the believability.

"Pineapple Express" Pot-a-rificThe storyline was simple, run away from the bad guys and not get caught. -
"Bottle Shock" for the Good Old BoysI was entertained by the entire film. There were a lot of old people around us seeing this film.

"The X-Files: I Want to Believe" and so Did IWhat could have made it better? A better story, better villains, better reason for them to come back and more on Molder's sister than just a mere mention. -
"Mamma Mia!" Psychotic Fun and Not a Chance in HellTo me this film was psychotic in more ways than one. It was too over the top, too cheese, too silly, too lacking in singing talent, too big eyed OH MY GOD moments, too corny and lacking of true heart. It had the potential to give it all, but I got nothing.

"The Dark Knight" Ledger Has the Last LaughThe storyline was believable. It was dark, gritty, witty, fitting and cold. That makes The Dark Knight the closest to Batman ambiance as the first, if not closer.

"Hellboy II: The Golden Army" Paved with Good IntentionsHellboy II has something that makes it interesting as a story and a movie that other superhero movies have as well, but because Hellboy is different it makes it unique enough to not have to be compared to other superheroes from D.C. or Marvel.

"Kit Kittredge: An American Girl" Full of Character and Hopet is children's movie, for sure. But it was a good movie. It was a good movie because it was character driven and that is an important thing. -
"Hancock" Appreciated A-HoleI would like to state that they did a fantastic job on the trailer. Normally trailers tend to rape the film and when I see it I start placing everything together and figuring out what was going on. Not with Hancock. -
"Wanted" Dead or Alive..Wanted, on the other hand, didn't have any lovey dovey crap and it excelled not only in story but visually. -
"WALL-E" Echo of Silent Movies of the PastWhat does make silent movies so awesome is that they have to rely on facial expressions and hand gestures.... WALLE-E comes into that same range as a silent movie, even though it had speaking parts.

"Get Smart" Good Thing It's a DestinationIt was an amusing movie and entertaining. -
"The Happening " is an Environmentalist SmorgasbordThe story is every bit as unique as I would expect for a film by M. Night Shyamalan. The delivery was a bit more light than his previous films even though the subject matter was a bit grim and it was first rated R film. -
"The Incredible Hulk" is Subtly MajesticNow the Hulk and how he looked. I think he looked fantastic. Five years did him some good. The screen shots don't' do him justice. -
"The Fall" Flirts and Romances This MoviegoerThe Fall has a tale within a tale and the within tale is visually stunning. The colors and the cinematography were phenomenal. It was rich and added more brilliance to a film that I had fallen in love with from the moment it started. -
"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is Moviegoer Pleasant and Hissssstorically CinematicAfter thinking about the other three films and how they were not really grounded in reality I've liked this film a little more. I was never a huge Indiana Jones fan. -
"The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" Dark Wit of Fantastical FantasyThe 2 hour and 20 minute movie was good without a moment of slow, for it paced itself perfectly. This need to always compare a movie to another movie when it's not that obvious, other than when a critic points it out, is a waste of written word.

"Drillbit Taylor" is a Drill Bit, UrbanelySuperbad's characters are reprised in this film. The same three guys are in this film slightly altered for the PG-13 crowd. That is a mark against this film.

"Witness" Silently HypnoticIn books you have to do a lot of telling and in order to make a movie stand out as different there has to be more physical appeal; such as looks. Witness does have a lot of those moments where the actors just look at one another and a silent conversation is occurring. -
"Semi-Pro" Rhymes with Semi-NO!There were funny moments. The rest of the movie was like a bunch of trash canned skits that were part of some Saturday night fun time. -
"In Bruges" Hell Hath Wit and GuiltThe characters are reprehensible but were made enchanting by their mannerisms, the lines and then their actions would reinstate how dark they are. But it was not enough to make them detestable. It was good writing, directing and acting that pulled that off. -
"Penelope" Has a Hidden TalentPart of the silver lining was the cast. I really like the cast. I was not shocked to see them perform fantastically. -
"A Scanner Darkly""Multiple Layers of Philosophical StuffI profess to be a quick witted...However, in this movie I have to question whether or not I was actually following along or was just enjoying the odd conversations littered with interesting viewpoints that were slightly thought provoking. -

"Be Kind Rewind" is the Perfect Saturday MovieI like Mos Def and Jack Black. I think they make a funny duo.....Be Kind Rewind failed because it was trying to find that happy medium of witty, quirky and heartwarming like Little Miss Sunshine minus the dark aspect. -

"Definitely, Maybe" is Probably How People Feel About Wanting to See ItThat trailer revealed too much...The good thing is that there are funny scenes in the movie that the trailer did not touch upon and touching moments that the trailer didn't even mentioned. -
"Jumper" Revs but SputtersI think the story was compelling via the idea. It could have given a bit more on the reason for the jumpers and less on the love aspect. -
"There Will Be Blood" is Boringly FascinatingI thoroughly enjoyed Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano when they had scenes together. Every single scene that they were in with one another was outstanding. They have great hate chemistry. -
"Untraceable" Ctrl Alt + Delete, ThnkxI suggest no one see this movie because I can't see it thrilling anyone over the age of 5. -
"Cloverfield" Code Name Shaky Cam SicknessCloverfield will make you appreciate the creative wonder that it is or you'll hate it for the shaky shaker that it is. -
"27 Dresses" Womanly Charming with a Bit of Male Wit27 Dresses is a decent film and it's not a horrible to be dragged to if you happen to get dragged. Marsden adds so male kick to the movie and so it's not totally chicked out. -
