    The Oakland Athletics have acquired former San Diego Padres' third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff in a four-player trade. Kouzmanoff was sent to Oakland with a minor leaguer for outfielders Scott Hairston and Aaron Cunningham.

    Milwaukee Brewers' right handed starting pitcher Ben Sheets hurt his elbow late in the 2008 regular season. He became a free agent after that season, and still hasn't signed with a team.

    The Los Angeles Dodgers have avoided arbitration with centerfielder Matt Kemp and right handed starting pitcher Chad Billingsley. The deal with Kemp spans two seasons and is worth $10.95 million. Billingsley signed a one-year, $3.85 million contract.
  • White Sox Avoid Arbitration with Jenks and Quentin
    The Chicago White Sox have avoided arbitration with right handed closer Bobby Jenks and outfielder Carlos Quentin. The 28-year-old Jenks inked a one-year deal worth $7.5 million. Quentin, 27, signed a one-year contract worth $3.2 million.
  • San Francisco Giants Sign Aubrey Huff
    Former Detroit Tigers' first baseman Aubrey Huff has inked a one-year, $3 million contract that will make him a San Francisco Giant. The 33-year-old Huff is versatile in that he can also play third base and the outfield.

    The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed former Atlanta Braves' outfielder Ryan Church to a one-year contract that will pay him $1.5 million. He hit .273 with four home runs and 40 runs batted in with the New York Mets and Braves last year in 111 games.

    Former Houston Astros' right handed closer Jose Valverde has signed a two-year, $14 million contract that will put him in a Detroit Tigers' uniform. The deal includes a $9 million option for the 2012 season.

    Right handed relief pitcher Joel Zumaya and the Detroit Tigers have avoided salary arbitration. The two sides agreed to a one-year deal worth $915,000.

    New York Knicks' point guard Nate Robinson had been benched for 14 straight games, which amounted to exactly one month. Robinson finally played at the Atlanta Hawks and scored 41 points, handing out eight assists. He shot 18-24 from the field.

    Central Michigan Chippewas' center Chris Kaman was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers with the sixth pick in the stacked 2003 NBA Draft. While he's having a great season, Kaman is not getting the recognition that he should get.

    Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Peyton Manning has been named The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player. This is the NFL-record fourth time that he has received the honor.
  • New England Patriots Eliminated from Playoffs
    The New England Patriots lost at home to the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2009 NFL playoffs. The loss was quarterback Tom Brady's first at home (regular season or postseason) since November 2006 (to the New York Jets).
  • Michael Turner: Curse of 370?
    Atlanta Falcons' running back Michael Turner carried the football 376 times in the 2008 season. Running backs that carry the football 370 or more times in a seasons usually struggle the next year and even after that. Turner had a rough 2009 season.

  • Randy Johnson Retires
    San Francisco Giants' left handed starting pitcher Randy Johnson retired after 22 major league seasons. Johnson won 300 games and four Cy Youngs in his career among several other great accomplishments. He's a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
  • Boston Red Sox Sign Adrian Beltre
    The Boston Red Sox inked former Seattle Mariners' third baseman Adrian Beltre to a one-year deal worth a guaranteed $10 million. Beltre won the American League Gold Glove at third base in 2007 and 2008.

    Former Los Angeles Angels' outfielder/designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero signed a one-year deal with the Texas Rangers that includes a mutual option for a second year. Guerrero will turn 35-years-old in February.

    Left handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman, who defected from Cuba, signed a five-year deal worth $30 million with the Cincinnati Reds. Chapman's fastball has been clocked at over 100 miles per hour.
  • Mouphtaou Yarou Cleared to Practice
    Villanova Wildcats' freshman forward/center Mouphtaou Yarou has been cleared to practice. He was diagnosed with Hepatitis B in late November. Head coach Jay Wright initially thought that the 6-9 Yarou was out for the season.

    Ohio State Buckeyes' junior guard/forward Evan Turner may be the best player in the country. However, he injured his back, and won't be able to play for a while.

    The Purdue Boilermakers are 13-0 and hold the No. 4 ranking in the country. Their 78-62 win over the sixth ranked West Virginia Mountaineers proved that they are national championship contenders.
  • Memphis Grizzlies Playing Solid Basketball
    The Memphis Grizzlies posted a record of just 24-58 in the 2008/09 season. So their 1-8 start to the 2009/10 season didn't shock many people. But, since 1-8 start, the Grizzlies have won 14 of their past 22 games to bring their record to 15-16.

    The New York Mets addressed two of their three major needs this off-season. They have signed a quality reliever (right hander Kelvim Escobar) and a star corner outfielder (Jason Bay). But, the Mets need to acquire a quality starting pitcher.

    Ricky Williams has not had a typical career, as he has dealt with extensive drug problems. However, his talent looks like it has ultimately won out over his marijuana issues, as he has had a brilliant season considering the circumstances.

    It is great that College Football and the NFL are taking precautions to ensure the safety of their players. But officials are taking the rules too literally, calling game-changing personal fouls when they should hold their flags.
