I grew up in New Jersey. For the first 12 years of my life, I lived in a very rural area near Princeton in a residence built by Charles A. Lindberg and the site of the famous Lindberg Kidnapping case, then called the Crime of the Century. It was converted into a residential treatment home for juvenile delinquents which my father ran. The school was named for my father after he passed away.
I earned a degree in history from the University of New Mexico as well as a masters degree in public administration from there. In 1980, I earned my J.D. from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota.
I practiced law in the areas of personal injury, criminal defense and bankruptcy with a firm outside of Minneapolis before moving to San Francisco in 1987. There, I practiced until 2004.
I have three children. One is severely autistic and requires special therapy and treatment. My other two are in good physical and mental health. Our experience with our special child has been trying at home and unfortunately a source of great stress on our family. Still, we persevere and do all we can in his best interests.
I have been athletic most of my life. I was named to a number of all star teams in my high school baseball career and also played varsity basketball. SInce then, I have played on numeorus semi-pro baseball and amateur basketaball teams. I am also a black belt in taekwondo and do masters swim workouts whenever I can.
I am interested in fitness, politics ( I am a member of the Democratic Socialist Party or DSOC), fine wines, and read a great deal on history, politics and literature.
