Dr. Kevin Blumenthal was born and raised in Northern Virginia and obtained his undergraduate degree from The University of Virginia. He graduated medical school from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia and then returned to the metropolitan area where he completed his combined general surgery and urology residency at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. There he received special training in laparoscopy and robotic surgery.
Dr. Blumenthal has always pursued a special interest in minimally invasive surgery, especially involving the treatment of prostate cancer. His training in robotic surgery led him to seek new treatments for prostate cancer that aim to achieve high cure rates with lower risks of side effects such as erectile dysfunction (ED) and urinary incontinence. His extensive research led him to HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound). He has studied the outcomes of HIFU and believes it holds promise as "the next generation of prostate cancer treatment" - one that provides a minimally invasive means to cure prostate cancer while preserving a man's quality of life. In fact, HIFU results show comparable cure rates to other treatments with lower risk of ED and urinary incontinence. He has been trained and mentored by Dr. Stephen Scionti and Dr. George Suarez, two of the preeminent HIFU surgeons in North America and pioneers in the field. He is only one of a select few surgeons in the Mid-Atlantic region trained in the use of HIFU.
Based on Dr. Blumenthal's experience in performing the surgery, he believes it holds several advantages over the other treatment modalities. It is unique in that it is non-surgical, free of radiation, minimally invasive, and performed as an outpatient procedure. It can also be used after other treatments have proven unsuccessful, such as radiation and cryotherapy. In addition, in the unlikely event of failure, HIFU can be repeated, and its use does not prevent further treatment by any other modality, inc
