A lifelong sports fan, I served as as sports writer and eventually the sports editor for The Daily Times in Ottawa, IL (about 60 miles southwest of Chicago) for about 15 years. It was a job that put me in a position to follow all of Chicago's professional sports teams on a first-hand basis, including seeing the Cubs in the playoffs during 2003 (I was at the infamous "Bartman ball" game) and also the Chicago White Sox winning the 2005 World Series. I also spent several years covering the University of Illinois football and men's basketball programs while I was in college for United Press International, getting the chance to literally run into Shaquille O'Neal during his senior season with LSU when they played at the Assembly Hall.
I have left the newspaper, but my love of sports and the stories of the game haven't diminished.
